The two most common network devices that are used in computers are routers and switches. But there are also some other devices such as hubs, repeaters, and bridges. But the first two devices are the primary ones because they are more efficient and powerful too.
Before going further, I am elaborating on the definitions of hubs, repeaters, and bridges. Hub is a multiple port repeater; a switch is a multiple port bridge. In the early days of wired Ethernet, the collision and broadcast domain was almost synonymous as all traffics were broadcasted from one machine to another on the segment.
But, in the present day, these two domains are different and they have different tools, and equipment to mitigate them. In this article, we will describe what the collision domain and broadcast domain are.
What is a Domain?
A domain is a type of computer network in which all user’s computers, printer accounts, and other devices of a network are registered. Specific to the internet, the term domain can refer to the structure of the internet.
The domain also refers to a network of an organization; how the resources of an organization are organized. In simple words, the domain is an area of control.
What is a Collision Domain?
As the name suggests, the collision domain is a segment of a network domain where packet collisions can happen. A collision takes place in a network when two devices send a packet at the same time on a shared network segment.
The packets collide and both devices need to send the packets again which reduces network efficiency. A collision occurs often in a hub environment as each port on a hub is in the same collision domain.
On the other hand, each port on a bridge, switch, or router is in a separate collision domain.
The collision domain put on to wireless networks; it also distresses the earlier versions of Ethernet.
What is a Broadcast domain?
A broadcast domain is a domain in which when a device sends out a broadcast message, all the devices that are present in the broadcast domain must pay attention to the message. It may lead to lots of congestion in the network, commonly referred to as LAN congestion that affects the bandwidth of the other users present in that network.
This domain contains all the devices that can reach each other at the data link layer using broadcast. Each port of a hub or a switch would be in the same broadcast domain.
But, all ports of a router are in a different broadcast domain, a router doesn’t broadcast from one domain to another.
Difference between collision domain and broadcast domain:
| Collision domain | Broadcast domain |
| The collision domain is a network segment that allows traffic to flow forward and backward. | The broadcast domain is a network segment that lets traffic to flow all over the network. |
| The collision domain is a physical set of computer devices in which packet collision can occur. | A broadcast domain is a logical set of computer organizations without using a router. |
| Packet collision takes place when multiple devices transmit data on a single wired link. | The broadcast domain mostly uses a switched environment for broadcasting, in this case, no collision takes place. |
| Switches will disruption in the collision domain. | Switches will never be disrupted in the broadcast domain. |
| In the collision domain, each port on the router domain is on a separate broadcast domain. | In the broadcast domain, all the ports on a hub or a switch are likely to be in the same broadcast domain. |
| The devices of the collision domain are included the devices of other IP subnetworks. | The broadcast domain is not limited to particular IP subnetworks for all types of IP broadcasts. |
Advantages of Collision domain:
- High network performance: collision domain improves the network’s performance by reducing collisions on the network. It will also improve data transmission and decrease packet loss.
- Better network security: collision domain also improves network security by reducing network attacks and preventing the risk of unauthorized access to the network.
- Perfect use of network resources: The collision domain allows the efficient use of network resources such as bandwidth; by avoiding the wastage of network resources and reducing the number of collisions.
Disadvantages of collision domain:
- Limited scalability: In larger networks, the collision domain may not be scalable. While the number of devices will be increased in a larger network, it lead to network congestion and performance degradation.
- Complex network management: while managing the collision domain seems to be difficult, it requires the use of protocols such as Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection which can be difficult to manage and maintain.
Advantages of broadcast network:
- Well-organized network communication: Broadcast domain allows multiple devices to receive the same message simultaneously; so it enables well-organized network communication.
- Improved collaboration: The broadcast domain enhances collaboration by enabling collaboration among network users and real-time communication.
- Simplified network management: The broadcast domain simplifies network management by permitting administrators to manage network devices and policies more effectively.
Disadvantages of broadcast network:
- Increased network congestion: The broadcast domain can enable increased network congestion, especially in larger networks. It may lead to packet loss and also affects network performance.
- Decreased network security: Broadcast domain can improve unauthorized access to the network, so it may lead to reduce network security, especially in an environment with a larger number of devices.
FAQ:
What is the main difference between collision and broadcast domains?
Ans: In the collision domain, one piece of information sent from one device can collide with the information sent by another device. In the broadcast domain, the information sent to one device is kept separate from the information sent to another.
What causes collisions on a network?
Ans: A collision on a network occurs when two separate device attempt to transmit data on a shared network where multiple devices are listening, only one device can transmit data to a point in time that needs the other devices must listening to the transmission.
Wrap up:
A collision domain is a single physical line where a collision can occur. It is a network domain that allows only one device to transmit data at a time. If more than one device tries to send data at the same time, then a collision occurs.
On the other hand, a broadcast domain is a network where broadcast traffic can be sent or received. All the devices that receive the traffic are in the same broadcast domain. So, if a device sends broadcast traffic, then all the other devices receive the broadcast traffic in the same broadcast domain.
Less collision leads to less overhead and delays in packets arriving at their destination. On the other hand, reducing broadcasts can make a more efficient network.
